3D Blacksburg Vision

3D Blacksburg: VT Burruss Hall, sunset

We envision a new electronic village, catalyzed through 3D Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) and advanced network telecommunications. We are working to instigate, collect and maintain a rich, multi-dimensional model of Blacksburg, Virginia and its environs. Public data sets as well as interactive models will be available as the base for an evolving and expanding public sphere- a new digital commons for citizens to engage and participate in their place. Open terrain, imagery and building models will provide innovative resources to at least three distinct user groups:

  • the Public (tourism, retail, social, etc.)
  • Operations personnel (emergency management, treat assessment, police department, town planners, civil engineers
  • Schools and University researchers

Our SDI framework is designed to provide the compose-ability or mashup-ability of several data sources and content pipelines. As more layers, models and semantics are added by the community, the list of potential applications expands. We foresee the integration of social networking technologies including synchronous and asynchronous multi-user communication channels for the 3D Blacksburg mirror world.  In addition, recent advances in real time X3D rendering on mobile devices brings location-based 3D community services to the near horizon.
